Silly questions

I don't like to waste people's time but I have heard so much about PHP that I can't wait to start using it.

I am fluent in HTML, Javascript and Flash but have never made that leap to CGI/Perl ASP and the like.

Can someone tell me, in plain English, excatly what is needed to write PHP pages. The ONLY thing I am certain of is that the server I upload files to is a capable of displaying PHP pages.

I have downloaded no end of programs but I am still confused. I am used to writing web pages in notepad, saving them as HTML files and FTPing them to my ISP. What changes do I need to make to my routine? Can I write a page say in notepad (as I have seen in hundreds of tutorials) save it as a .php and just load it in NS6 locally? I am not an idiot, just confused!

HI,

I am writing my own RTF file using the tags, I send it using SMTP protocol...
When we read the file at other end using Outlook 2000, it doesn't show the output in formatted fashion.

Whats the reason , is it because I have not sent Winmail.dat file as attachment???

You don't need much. If you have Win95, 98, ME, etc. and want to get started quick, try here:

(small footprint web server and instructions on installing PHP).

If you want to use Apache, try here:

http://www.phpgeek.com

(this will get you PHPtriad including Apache, PHP and MySQL).

Either way, you can start developing stuff locally and then upload it to your hosting provider once you've gotten a working set of PHP files going.

For authoring, you can use any capable text editor. Some people really like HomeSite as well, but I haven't used it.
