Warning: failed to connect...

Hi i'm using PHP on Apache in Windows 98. On testing an email script i got this message:

Warning: Failed to Connect in c:\program files\apache group\apache\htdocs\do_sendfeedback.php on line 14

line 14 is:
mail("[e-mail]", "Feedback Form",

can someone tell me what i'm supposed to specify the SMTP server as? right now it's specified as localhost.

Hi there,

In your php.ini file you must specify your smtp server that you use to send mail through your e-mail client, e.g. smtp.yourisp.com.

Note also that I could only ever get the mail function working once I started running PHP as an Apache module, therefore mail() does not work with PHP as a CGI extension.

that didn't seem to work and i'm not sure what you mean by running it as an Apache module. do you mean as an alias? there is a LoadModule already set to read php.

should line 14 be modified to show my email address instead of [e-mail]?

Yes, my apologies for failing to mention that.

[e-mail] should be changed to your e-mail address, and localhost to your ISP's SMTP server.

If you're invoking PHP with LoadModule in Apache's httpd.conf file, you are running PHP as an Apache module, and therefore mail() should work.

What sort of smtp server are you using? - I use Postcast which is installed on the same machine as Apache and php4. I find that if I set Postcast to send mail automatically I get the 'failed to connect' message. If I set it to send manually (and queue the mail until I press 'send') it works fine.

In other words, I have the same problem as you - but it appears to be nothing to do with php.

i'm triying to use INDIGO as my sendmail server, but i got this error:

"Warning: Failed to Connect in ...mail.php on line 4"

I Think it's a php config problem ... so im triying to configure the php.ini to use, but i can't find out how to do it.

anybody can help me out ?
