PHP on Win ME not working?

I can't get PHP to work at all under Windows ME + PWS 4.

I've carried out all of the steps described in the documentation. I succeeded installing it on Win98 & NT4 before.

Could it be because I'm using PWS to serve jsp pages in connection with Tomcat?

I've tried both php.net & php4win.de versions, and all I get is a 500 error.

PHP (php3 as well as php 4) has been running fine on my machine with Win ME. No problems so far.

I run two WinMe machines at home without problems, one of which runs as a server (Mail server, web server, ftp server, etc.) and have much more stability than any other windows I've used (Including WinNT, and 2000 at my workplace, but I'm looking into 2000 for a server at home setup by myself.)

One thing I would say is: Throw away PWS, it's a heap of junk that is buggy and doesn't do as you want. It also is a complete pain in the posterior to get working right on WinMe.
I use a piece of software called Sambar Server ([ad]www.sambar.com[/ad]) that supports ISAPI filters and is small and cheap (Free for just a few things, $99/$75 for the full package, depending on whether they've upped the price for 4.4/5.0 yet)

It's stable, it does mail, it does JSP (If you want to get into that), it has its own scripting language, it does FTP, etc. It's a useful piece of software.

Very tiny and free Win32 web server for PHP is at http://badblue.com/helpphp.htm - instructions and examples for PHP. The server itself is about 75K in size and it can be downloaded, installed & configured for PHP in about a minute.

Also does P2P file-sharing (e.g., pics, music) - kind of like Gnutella's model but using all web serving technology.

You can run it on any port so that you can leave PWS intact and it takes up almost no space.

Some times you have to manually configure the hosts file that is stored under the system file in c:\windows

There is also a few other things that you may want to try but usally winme should do all this for you.

I've used Sambar Server and found it a very good all round server... However... more recently I have started using Apache on my Windows machine... Works like a dream and is stupidly easy to configure etc. (had running on Win98, ME, NT and 2k) It also has the added advantage of being very similar to our web server so that I can mirror my local test site with the live one.

I used IIS with Win2k. I had a lot of problems. I deleted IIS and installed Apache, which is much better than IIS or PWS I guess.

I would support using Apache. In addition, there is a gem of a program called "Apache Configuration Editor v1.x" available from "www.downloadnow.com".

This program makes it very easy to configure an Apache Webserver through a GUI interface. It runs on any PC with Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 and above.

Best of all, it allows configuration of the Apache Webserver without having to edit a configuration file.

How can u get any easier than editing a config file?

All the variables are self explanatory!

If you are using something like apache web server usally u would be able to understand the config file!!!

The configuration files can be very difficult which is why I prefer to use a sort of GUI based editor. I understand that Apache are working on a proper GUI based editor for Apache configuration files.

Seriously is you use a gui, you never get a grip on how apache actully works and that can be a great tool when programming.
