... so I can write and test PHP files on my home computer without being on the net.
How do I do it? I followed the tutorial somewhere on this site and that didn't help.
If possible please be detailed and step by step.

option 1) install apache... install php... put php scripts in the htdocs directory... use a web browser to view them
option 2) just run them with php.exe...
Go to www.php4win.de and get that version of PHP. follow that read me VERBATIM. you'll have PHP/Apache and the gdlibs up in no time!
And if you still have problems w/Apache, try the free BadBlue server (simple step-by-step instructions here: http://badblue.com/helpphp.htm ).
