php hangs when php_gd.dll is uncommented

I'm trying to run PWS + Win98 + PHP. Everything works fine except when I uncomment php_gd.dll and restart my computer. If I try to run a php script after that (even one that doesn't use any gd functions), it will hang and I have to crtl+alt+delete to shut down php.exe (if running in cgi mode). I have this problem in CGI or asapi, and both on PWS and BadBlue.

I've tried using older versions as well as newer versions of GD. I tried it with php 4.05 and 4.06-dev.

I seemed to have this problem as well running IIS4 on NT with php 4.0.5. I messed around for a bit, but I had a similar problem with it just 'locking up' all the time. After getting a little frustrated, I tried going back to php 4.0.4 and it seemed to start working again. I know downgrading the php version is hardly the best solution, but it works. Anyone else have this happen and have a better way of dealing with it?
