php4 mail() with w2kpro help

I have now been trying for some time to get the mail() function working with php4 but to no avail. Firstly, i am running php4 on my win2k pro box with iis 5.0 installed. What i don't understand is what exactly do i have to do to the smtp virtual server and the php.ini file in order to get the mail() function working. Also, is the use of the smtp virtual server enough or do i also need to install a complete mail server? I am completly lost and am starting to become very confused, so any help from someone who already has mail() working, on a similar setup, would be greatly appreciated.

in the php.ini there might be an option for smtp values, edit these. or then again it might be in the IIS config file, but i do not know as i use apache.
