Reference folder path in Windows ??

How do you reference your $root_path in PHP4 on Windows 2000. I have tried:
$root_path="c:\sites\irm"
$root_path="c:/sites/irm"
$root_path="\sites\irm"

Does anyone know how you specify this on Windows Platform. Why cant it be as easy as Unix !!

this is a wild guess, but try:
$root_path="c:\sites\irm";
