Are you looking to just print an image to the screen as you would in HTML, or do you want to actually create images? If it's the former:
echo "<img src=\"/path/to/image.ext\">\n";
should do the trick quite nicely. If you're actually wanting to create images, yes you do need to have gd installed. The gd extension is included in the zip file distribution off php.net. I'm not sure since I've never had reason to play with PHPTriad, but it's probably included in that distro as well. If it isn't I'll be surprised, it's one of the more popular extensions. HTH.
