Heh, heh, heh.... which one of the Win9x "alpha's" shall we designate a server? Better question, where do you want to crash today?

The Win9x line (95, 98, ME) are and were intended for home or light office work only. NT (and now Win2K) is Redmond's server OS. Win9x ships with the PWS (a very scaled down version of IIS) webserver, can run serveral other httpd's (Apache for example), and some databases. It can be run as a server, but NEVER run Win9x as a server in a production environment..... testing and development only. Win9x isn't designed to act as a server and lacks all the security protocols and features needed for this kind of usage. Win2K Professional is the most affordable server OS MS currently offers (at around $150 USD I think). Or, you could spend $2 on a cd and download any number of a variety of OS's that shall remain nameless..... but casually use a penguin as a mascott🙂

Win 98 can never be used as web server but you can use it as testing platform. For testing purpose, you can install PWS (personal web server) included in win 98 CD, addons/pws folder. TO run PHP, download app. installer from PHP.NET

Similarly, never use PWS for anything. Ever. No, really, just say no. Use Apache. Not because I'm an open source evangelist, but because it's fast and it's stable. PWS uses way too many resources and is way too unstable and open to attacks. Trust me on this. And setting up PHP with Apache is as simple as pasting a couple of lines into httpd.conf.

He is asking about WINS. Windows Internet Name Service,

WINS is NOT a web server, but basically is a NETBIOS nameserver.

I found this thread by searching google for \"win98 wins server\", eh? So what if its 2 months old, its still a relevent question.

SO Geoff, maybe if you ANSWERED the QUESTION instead engaging in your self righteous discussion on why one shouldnt use win9x for web serving, I wouldnt have been so abrasive, eh?

Some of us po\' folk cant afford a $700 software license for a windows server, and would like to know if there is an alternative wins server for win9x (or nt workstation, for that matter), eh?
