Windows PHP IDE

Hi all,

I'm just wondering which IDE do people in the PHP community prefer for their PHP developement. I've tried some of them including PHPed, PHP Edit, Komodo, and QaDRAM, but did not get any of the installations to work in debug mode except for Komodo (but it doesn't support an internal web browser. ) I am using Xitami webserver with mysql and php working comfortably together, but don't know whythe IDEs that I've tried does not work.

Are there other IDE gems out there that I should know about? Thanks.

IDE's? No..... but a text editor will be your best friend🙂 Seriously, I looked at most of the IDE's you mentioned and after finally getting them to work (sort of, most of the time) I discovered that they don't really have any features that you can't achieve with an editor like EditPlus or TextEdit. My suggestion is to grab a copy of EditPlus (www.editplus.com), then grab the most recent PHP syntax and auto-completion files from their "user files" section, then grab a copy of the PHP (and MySQL) manual for your local box. Those IDE's don't do anything (that I could see) that you can't do just as easily in a text editor. HTH.

regarding the editing of php files I use ultra edit and find it very good. lots of nice features.

I am looking for a visual debugger for php. I have tried komodo but find it very slow are there any other php debuggers for windows?

I agree with Andre -- UltraEdit rocks. It's by far the best editor I've used, although it isn't PHP-specific. Just download the PHP wordfile from the site to get it to do PHP syntax highlighting, function recognition, and so on. It works with any language, as long as there's a wordfile for that language -- and there're a lot on the site.

I use an editor called HTML-Kit - it's designed as an HTML editor, but it will do PHP syntax higlighting... The thing I find most useful about it is the search and replace tool because you can search for regular expressions in your documents.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'll have to use a combination of utilities to get a complete, functioning package. Some one advised me to check out Macromedia UltraDev 4 along with the PHP extension. Now if I use something like UltraEdit as an external editor for the syntax highlighting and robust search/replace (editor type capabilities) while using UltraDev for the database connectivity (ODBC), form design, and in-browser test. I'm still missing the debugging capability that Komodo offers. Can some one suggest a work around?

Edit plus all the way. It's really good. I've not tried ultraedit (i'm going to now I know about it) but I have used edit plus a lot. One feature I really like is the ability I have of adding my own auto complete entries. I can now type "method" and edit plus puts a template of a class function into my file complete with commenting headers and everything. very nice program. Well worth the registration fee.

Just to throw my two pennies in, I've tried UltraEdit, PHPCoder, and the Zend IDE. The Zend IDE is fantastic for development - particularly if you're used to a VB/VC interface whereby you can step through the code and check out the variables etc., it also gives the complete output that gets sent back to the browser including all the header info which is excellent for developing WML pages with. Having said that I've been using UltraEdit for about a year and a half and use that mainly because it's very fast and versatile and does everything I need - I just use the Zend one for debugging. You can group files together into projects in UltraEdit which is handy too.

PHPEdit is very nice program.
It has a lot of bugs, but it is very useful -
you can debug, set breakpoints etc.

Well one excellent text editor that i have not seen mentioned is jEdit. This is an open source text-editor written in Java. It has PHP syntax highlighting, easy to use interface as well as a very cool plugin system. The only bad part about jEdit is that you have to download a Java Runtime Environment (Java RE can be found at java.sun.com) before you can use it. More about jEdit at jedit.org

These people are building an open source PHP IDE exactly because of this problem. They were also frustrated by the lack of PHP IDEs so they decided to make one. Check out the site...
