I am running at Windows 2000 Professional Machine, is there a program that I must use to code in PHP or do I just code in it and it will appear on my web page. I am asking this because I once did a simple very simple PHP code, using echo, and it did not even work.

well you have some options. The one I recommend is to download apache (web server),php4,and mysql. Then after your install them (and follow the directions in the INSTALL file for php) you will have it all running.Just start apache and mysql (if you are database programming) and then use it like IIS (somewhat). Links are below for the software.

PHP4 (http://www.php.net)
MySQL (http://www.mysql.com)

and make sure you get the windows versions.

There are automated installers for PHP/apache/mysql. These make your life much easier under windows.

Once you've got everything installed, you can use any simple text editor (eg notepad) to actually input the code.

I've been trying to get the PHP interpretor to run locally for six months. Apparently WinMe doesn't like the set up. I also hear the Win2000 doesn't like it either. The Apache installation failed too.

If all else fails, you can still go on-line to get your work done. It takes more effort, and you'll be burning on-line hours, but you will be relying on your webhost's working setup, not your local faulty one.

In a nutshell, edit your local file, putting in your PHP stuff. Then FTP it to your webserver. Then test it on-line. If it crashes, edit the local version, FTP it again, and re-run. Not very efficient, but it works. I've been doing it this way for almost a year. And until they release a version of Apache and PHP that likes running under Windows xx, I'll have to keep doing it this way.

Try the forxserv package, it works 100% on win2k

No, Win XP promises to be their worst product ever, esp. with their snooper registration process and their dropping of Java (and possibly Netscrape javascript) support entirely.

And I wouldn't put C# far behind bad packages, with its long learning curve. Just when we thought we had reached the top of the VB and VC++ mountain, Gates has a little surprise in store for us. "Hey guys, over here!" as he yells from the next mt. top.

I'd go back to Win98, but it will void my warranty on the new machine (so they tell me).

What is this forxserv package? Does it replace Apache, or what? Is it even possible to run PHP locally at all and skip the continual FTP cycle until everything is tested, debugged, and ready to upload? That would be heaven to me!

Forxserv is a complete package that installs apache, mysql and PHP including the GD library etc under inwindows.
So you get the goodness of un*x software on the badness of Win.
