dshellgenerichook.dll error

 I have this error since yesterday, probably after doing a windows update but not sure. I am using windows98 plue ie 6, tried upgrade to six after getting error, I also tried netscape with the same error. I can open ie or netscape but as soon as I try to do something ie log onto hotmail the error comes up if you try to carry on and not shut down it will freeze everything. Has anyone seen this error or know of a fix.

Any help getting my kids computer back on the internet greatly apprecicated.

Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders and type in the DLL name to find what directory it's in. If it's in a directory under Program Files, try reinstalling the application. If it's in Windows\System, right click on the file and go to Properties on the popup menu, then switch to the Version tab if there is one and see who made the DLL and what the description says to get an idea of what uses it and what you might need to reinstall.

This error is a keyboard hook associated with attnaget.exe. This file is associated plug in to the kazaa music download program and is for advertising. The only thing I know is I did a windows update and then nothing worked. My daughter now states she did a upgrade to kazaa also but unsure when. It affects all windows and browsers, I later learned I would freeze up just attempting to copy files or do a find command through windows. I have removed the kazaa program and then removed the plug in uzla (something like this) which is where dshellgenerichook.dll is used. Everything is restored and back to normal. I am sure there is going to be many of these showing up. Yes for those who emailed I am running up to date virus scan. I appreciate the many emails sent to me in a attempt to fix. My kids are back on the battlenet, icq and hotmail as well as others. I am going to attempt to install this music program again over the weekend and see if error occurs again. Thanks to all I hope this helps someone else. The problem here is if you don't have two computers on-line you are into using DOS and some knowledge to find the source, or a re-load of the system which would have taken less time. I could not even open the attnaget.exe file to see what it was associated to, and there were two or three trying to do this for me, not nubies. Once attnaget.exe removed from c:\windows\system I was able to run find again and found another file associated to this and it sent me to the uzla plug in. (Not sure of spelling of the plug in).

Once again thanks to all it is nice to see others trying to help. I hope this explanation helps someone else with same problems.

I have the same thing on a 98 box that had a couple of viruses. I can't delete anything off the desktop and if I try to search for the .dll it locks up solid.....What to do now?

my problem is that my computer keeps on looking for this file when windows starts and says there\'s an error in starting a program, but the thing is i don\'t know which one. i can\'t get rid of it. i\'ve tried reinstalling windows, to no avail. it started suddenly. i\'ve tried looking in other computers and they do not have this file, but they run perfectly fine. where can i download it or what other programs use it?

I have exactly the same problem.I updated my cam and the error "dshellgenerichook missing" appeared. I uninstalled it again as well as my cam and the problem is still there.dshellgenerichook.dll There doesn't seem to be anything else wrong but it keeps bringing up the error whenever I boot up.Can anyone help us?

Well I seemed to have the same problem with the can not find dshellgenerichook.dll popping up once Windows98 startsup. I finally found that the createsw.exe in the windows\system directory was causing the problem. There is an entry in the registry under the "Run" entry trying to start this program (Not sure where it is at... Just search for "run" entry and you will see a bunch of programs here) . Not sure how it got there though? Anyway deleted it from the registry and it fixed the problem.... Hope this will help all!

Hi there,I'm not sure what Chuck did but I actually went into start>run then typed in msconfig then hit OK. Go into the tag, start up and untick setFTPBack. It has the createsw.exe file in it and then apply, OK then restart your pc. It will stop trying to start up that program when you open windows. I don't know whether I should delete the createsw.exe program in Windows/system directory but anyway the error doesn't come up anymore when I start up. Let me know how you go. Good Luck Eva

probably, because it started when i had to uninstall imesh (my computer wouldn't shut down as long as imesh was in the system tray (is that what you call the thing at the bottom right of the screen?)

ok! I had this problem too and thanx to this discussion here I could fix the problem!
I'm running a W2K box but my approach should work fine on any other system.
The problem here is as mentioned somewere above the p2p client IMesh whith his Autoupdate function, which is installed not only as a service but also in the AutoStart folder. (Probably other clients like KaZaa use this functions too).
As mentioned also already somewere above you must remove one or more keys under "Run".
This "Run" key is in the registry however exactly under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
there are some keys each of which points to an executable file or dll that will be run at startup of the Computer.
There you'll find also a key with or createsw.exe or FTP_back.exe or both.
Remove these keys (you don't need them however).
Make sure also to search the registry for "Createsw.exe" as well as "FTP_back.exe".
Perhaps it is also in other places on your Machine.
Finally make sure to remove "IMesh" from the "Startup" or "AutoStart" folder, which is found under Start->Program Files->Startup
Reboot your System or logout/login to see if it worked.

I hope this helps anyone here!
It seems that some newer versions of the p2p installers work in another way leaving some keys and executables around.

do you know how to find any other bits of this that might be in the registry? i've just fixed a problem with another of these horrible .dll applications from new.net, (newdot~2.dll mean anything?) but i had precise instructions from them.

Sorry but I don't know about the problem collegated with newdot~2.dll, but if you haven't found something yet, I've found a discussion on removing it on http://courses.forum.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/netforum/resnet/a/8--51.3.1.1.1. It also seems to be installed by newer versions of some p2p clients and seems to be in the "Run" key of the Registry.
