system command never stops

Here's my problem:
I call a .bat script from my php page,
with system( 'my.bat' ) or my.bat, the command starts, but never stops, so the page is never shown.

In the .bat, a call to fop, which calls a java command is thrown, may be is that the problem ?

If anybody had such problem, please help me ....

The problem is that all the system execution functions wait for the output of the executed command before allowing the rest of the script to continue. I've run into the same problem with some of my apps the the past but have yet to find a way to fork the returned output (although the man docs lead me to believe that it is possible).
