Newbie - php_self

Hello! I'm newbie in php knowlegde. I installed php4.0.5 and Apache3.2.3 web server, and when a used php_self (<?php echo php_self ?>) it returned my nothing.
Do you know why could be it? Could be an instalation problem?

first off, welcome to the world of PHP

Second, I can see 3 things wrong with your code.

This should work for you

<?php echo $PHP_SELF; ?>

I did 3 things: Added an echo statement (print would have also worked but I prefer echo), add the "$" to indicate it was a variable (all variables MUST have '$' before them) and capitalized it. PHP IS case sensitive so $php_self is different from $PHP_SELF

Hello again! Thank you very much for your help, but...

I try with your code <?php echo $PHP_SELF; ?> , and it doesn´t work in my platform (WINNT 4.0, Apache, PHP4.0.5, it returns nothing). I try with php info <? phpinfo(); ?>
... and this return me the next ...

HTTP_SERVER_VARS["PHP_SELF"] /php4/php.exe/php/info.php

Could it be something wrong in the configuration?¿?

Most likely a config issue. Are you running the normal INI or optimized INI? You probably have the option to automatically set global variables off.

If you can't figure it out, let me know and I will look at my ini.

I had the same problem and couldn't find anyone to help. Here is what I did to fix the problem:
First, backup your php.ini file.
Now, open php.ini if your favorite editor. (I use good ole notepad.)
Find the line: register_globals = off
change it to: on
I did that and it fixed all my problems with PHP_SELF.

Update to my last post.
global is set to off for security reasons. Here is how to make PHP_SELF work without opening any security holes.
In the header of your HTML, add the following:
<? global $PHP_SELF; ?>
Now run your code. PHP_SELF should now work.
