E-mail program (.exe) for PHP

I have a very simple email reply form on my website which requires a local program to send messages. Are there any small .exe programs which could efficiently handle the act of sending the user's comments to my email address?
I have tried Netscape's mail program, as well as some "universal" cgi programs without any luck.

There's a program called blat that whas designed to send mail for CGI scripts... Do a search for "Blat.exe" and you'll find it.

Why not just use the mail functions built into PHP to do this?

I have Julie's "PHP Essentials" book and other than some typos and minor errors, it's a bangup intro book, especially for those looking to do database integration using PHP. In fact, that is where I first read about mail() and I've found that www.thickbook.com contains online much of the material from her published works.

That works great with email servers that don't require auth headers. The following is a copy of my server logs:

[03/Nov/2001:15:30:42 -0900] SMTPD [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]: Mail relay attempt denied (not local, no AUTH).
[03/Nov/2001:15:30:42 -0900] SMTPD [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]: Invalid RCPT To: recipient, terminating.

As you can see the php script successfully sends the mail to the email server where the spam blocker promptly rejects it. No AUTH

Now the question. What is AUTH? How to send it via PHP?
