windows xp

unfortunately i've got a new computer with xp home. I used to do php with pws on windows 98.
Micro$oft have gone and shipped xp home with no pws or IIS.
What can I do??!!
will apache work on xp home?? has anyone done this?

Woo hoo!! "Typhoid Mary" has been stripped from the normal distro🙂 I can't see why Apache won't work on XP. There was a poster last week sometime that indicated he had some problems with a installer package designed to config PHP into Win32 Apache, but when he did a manual config Apache and PHP started talking happily away (believe he had MySQL going too).

I manually installed apache, mysql, and php onto xp home.....and it all seems to be working fine.

The thing with Windows XP, as anyone using it will soon learn, is that while reading instructions for windows the two letters XP change in your mind to NT 🙂 because xp is basically nt.. whenever you come to a stumbling block and think "surely they support this in xp.." just check if it's supported by NT, if so, how, and then follow that line of reasoning....

to get php set up on mine i just installed IIS (following instructions for NT) which is included with XP.

All the posts I've come across regarding this problem have been related to the installers some sites have posted up for download. Those installers have been written for Win2K/NT 4.0 and don't appear to work on XP. Since Win32 has fostered such a point-and-click installation mentality, it shouldn't be surprising that this will be the first choice of installation. I don't think it necessarily occurs to many people coming from a Win32 background that there may be other/manual (real🙂 methods for installing PHP.

cant help but point out that phpdev => http://www.firepages.com.au/dev4.htm installs apache/php/mysql/perl/phpmyadmin on XP in a quite graceful fashion - then again I would say that.
