Access Database is slow

Not sure if this is related to SQL but I have a similar situation were I have just upgraded a file server from Netware 3.12 to Windows 2000 Server. The users on the network share a small Access Database that used to reside on the Netware Server, which is now on the new Win2K server. The users are using a using mixed Win95 and Win98 clients, Access 97 to access the database. For some reason, the database is very slow on the Win2K server compared to the Netware server. (Using TCP/IP as opposed to IPX)The Netware server was lightning fast for a Pentium 233 compared to the new P4 hardware.

One thing that I can think of that may need some testing is the opportunistic locking that I had to disable on the same server to allow the smooth operation of ACCPAC on the same server.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does this have anything to do with PHP at all?

Anyway, Access is not a database, it is a flatfile thingy, which makes it extremely bad.

You should convert to a real SQL server as soon as possible.

Lets make this thread on topic.

Tim, download the mysql odbc. Install it on client machines. Get a linux box install mysql with php with apache. Get phpMyAdmin a php dbase admin app (now where on topic) and install it on the Linux server.

Make a mysql dbase identical to the access thingy. Link an access file to the mysql dbase via odbc. Copy all data from the original dbase to the new dbase. Distribute the new access dbase which has linked tables to mysql among the windows clients. Use these files to access the data which now resides on the linux box.

Ship me your P4 and reuse the p233 🙂
