network question

I am trying to set up my network using windows ME and I entered my username and password for the Client for microsoft network. It was previously a novell/netware network. Now the logon box comes up and it says my username is not valid. I can't get back to the desktop on this machine even if I hit cancel. The box just keeps popping up with an error message.

How do I override this box so I can connect this computer to the network?

Is their a trick to get rid of it?

Quick few questions..

You said that this used to be part of a novell network. Did you completly remove the client from the pc?
When you get the login box, what happens if you hit 'ESC' key? 95/98/98SE and ME are all capable of this trick - NT/2000/XP are not.

Now, if #2 didnt help, boot to a dos prompt.
goto c:\windows (or wherever windows is installed) and do this:

del *.PWL

*.pwl is the PassWord List for users on that pc.

I don't know if I removed the whole client. I deleted every piece of software I saw and even installed a new network card. How can I know if I removed everything?

esc key didn't work. Also how do I boot to a dos prompt? The only way I can figure is to hit F8 key during bootup to get to safe mode then I get the dos prompt there.

I tried to delete the password list like you said.

del *.pwl

But it said that was a bad command. Also the safe mode dos prompt said it was risky to use it in safe mode.

So to answer your question no. Nothing works and I don't really want to reload windows to get rid of this stupid novell network client.

Any ideas?

Ok.. when booting, hit f8 to get the menu.. then, hit shift+f5.
You should see an option (#5 for me) to get command prompt only.

then, cd to c:\windows

try the del *.pwl there.

Dos prompts in SAFE mode ARE dangerous, if you are not VERY sure what your doing..

Short of that, boot to a floppy disk, then goto c: and try that..

O.K. I got back to windows and started a DOS prompt from there. When I tried to delete *.pwl it said bad command. So I used the search for files and found the .pwl list. I deleted all of the passwords there. Now when I install the drivers for the new network card I am still getting a microsoft networking logon box with the old username and it is also asking for a domain on restart. It shouldn't come up until I configure the card to get onto the network but none the less it is showing up. There are no .pwl on the hard drive so why is this box still coming up? Also it says it can't validate the username to log onto the network. I haven't even put in a username yet.

Is there a way to completely erase any trace of any usernames and passwords for the previous novell client? Something is making this old logon box appear and I can't get any further than that.

Does any of that make any sense?

ok. you have a couple of problems.

Domain question
Your computer is setup to login into a domain. On 98/me do this:
Start/Settings/Control/Network
highlight Client for MS
First screen = UNCHECK "Log on to Windows NT Domain"
Old users.
Couple of ways to do this one. One is a RegEdit (DONT reccomend)
The other is to grab "TweakUI" from the MS pages. (Search microsoft.com for tweakui, youll find it.) In it, is has a "Paranoia"
option - It will let ya clear all the older users out.

Now, if this computer is NOT part of ANY kind of network, (other than the internet) you can REMOVE the Client for Windows.. as well.. that will take care of #1 and 2..
