how can I detect if asp is running

We're experiencing a lot of downtime on our asp pages (apache server running chilisoft).

We've got too much asp code already written to traslate it all into php, so we are thinking of mirroring the sites on an nt server, and redirecting to this server when our asp is down.

Does any one know of a way of doing this in php? I'm hoping there will be a bit of php that can tell me if the asp server is running, and if so redirect to the other server's address.

ASP is a windows thing, and no matter how horrible and blood-curdling it is, it runs best on NT servers.

They cost an arm and a leg and still give quationable performance, but it's more reliable than ASP on Apache through Chilisoft.

On the other hand, you could decide not to buy NT servers and use the cash to hire a PHP programmer to convert the ASP site to PHP. That will take time and money, but downtime costs more (and so will the new MS licences) and in the end you will be better off with PHP than with ASP.

we weren't intending to set up another server ourselves, but to redirect to another server if our asp was not working (hosted by a diffeerent company)

I was wondering if there was a way to tell if the asp was working or not, using php or similar.

If I had my time again I'd start with php, but I learnt server-side coding through using the gui in dreamweaver ultradev, and no php support there 🙁

You could use the crontab to start a php script that opens a socket to your server and requests a simple ASP page that just returns some random data. If it responds within X seconds with the correct data, ASP is up. Otherwise, it's down and you can restart the webserver process.
