Well this is certainly a nice state of affairs...

I am curious, when whoever wrote php.ini included php_mcrypt.dll in the extensions list was it a cruel joke played on windows users?

Sorry I don't have *nix. I have win2k. I dont have a compiler. I dont have time to get gcc running under cygwin. I must get this script done by the end of the month!

Here's the sad thing: if I had the money, I'd be an ASP/.NET person by now- I started out being a total Open Source advocate- until i realized there's no managment in the open source community. NONE. Who is running the show? Everyone and no-one. Its a bad thing to bet your next meal on folks.

Try going to your favorite php site and typing in "php_mcrypt.dll" into their search engine- see what you find- more than likely NOTHING.

....and most of those same sites you mention in your rant (as well as the PHP Manual) also say that mycrypt itself is at best not well supported on the win32. It's nothing to do with PHP. This is an issue with win32 as a platform lacking key components needed for proper mcrypt support.

Open Source does not mean everything is solved for. On the contrary, it means you have the power to solve it yourself. If you need high-encryption for PHP on Win32, write it. If you don't want to write it, convince Redmond to add mcrypt support in the next service pack. If not, don't bitch because of limitations caused by the platform itself.

Hint: Open Source is not a free ride. It has problems and limitations just like everything else. It merely empowers you to fix problems and remove limitations should you choose to.

Thank you for your information about why it is so difficult to find this php_mcrypt.dll. Here I was thinking it had something to do with the OS not having a crypt function (cant remember where I heard that).

Apologies if my frustration was taken as an attack on either php or open source. I owe a great deal to the latter. Survival of the people with the brains and time to RTFM I suppose- I've learned a lot that way. This freelancing thing is interesting (in the Chinese sense).

I've written a quick encryption function in php that will serve my purposes.
