Intranet Performance

Hi,

I am about to launch an intranet at a 80 user site. (I have been working on a budget of about £100 for hardware AND software!) This bought a copy of windows Me and a couple of jars of coffee.

Anyway - what are the odds of the Apache / MySQL / PHP combination holding up on a 400MHz P2 machine for about 15-20 users simultaneously? Every page requires access to PHP and MySQL. The network all 10mbs ethernet.

Also, is it necessary to close MySQL connections with PHP? I have not really noticed any method of doing this and am worried that open connections would cause problems given that only 1 thread seems ever to open.

The odds are pretty low actually, it'll work for a while but with the old 9x kernel, windows will fall over very quickly (matter of hours actally) so you'll have to reboot quite often.

Ever considered Linux or FreeBSD? Then you could've bought £100 worth of coffee 🙂

You shouldn't need to close connections as PHP generally does this for you.
