cant get apache and php talking

I have installed apache and php (both the newest versions available) on my xp machine. Installation is fine and everything seems to work ok until I try using them together.

I create a file called test.php and put it in the c:\program files\apache group\apache\htdocs\test.php

I then open the browser and type http://localhost/test.php all that is returned is the code I have typed in the test.php file >>>> <?php phpinfo(); ?>

Does anyone have any ideas as I am going mad trying to figure the problem out.

There are 3 changes that you need to make to get Apache to properly process you php files. These should all be made in httpd.conf

LoadModule php4_module "C:/<php path>/sapi/php4apache.dll"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
Restart Apache

i have the similar problem with charlotte...

i have install XP is C drive, php, mysql and apache are installed in D drive. I have already done the modification of the httpd.conf you mentioned before, but will I http://localhost/test.php, it prompt a download msg to download the test.php file.

also, when i type http://localhost/, a NOT ACCEPT page is shown. Do you know how can i fix it??? thanks!

Unfortunately, I've only got it working on 95,98 and NT. Have got a spare copy of XP.

Worth having a hunt through this bulletin board, as I'm sure that this has come up before.

Actually, after a glass (or three) of wine a couple of thoughts.

Are you runnning PHP as a module rather than a CGI.
Are you running Apache as a service. If so, does that service user have access to the D drive (under NT, u run Apache as a service and need to make sure that the user permissions are right for the directories).
You're not using notepad to edit your php files. Notepad has the world's most irritating habit of sticking .txt on the end of everything.

e.g. I save it as justin.php, it makes it justin.php.txt.

I have the same problem with Win ME. I can configure it correctly as a CGI and it works, but when I try to run as a module it gives me the same download msg.
