PHP upgrade

I'm new to PHP, and my first job is to convert an application written with PHP3 to PHP4 specification. It does not work at all at the moment, probably because the sessions are broken.
Does anyone have any idea where I should start. The only errors I could see in my server logs mentioned that 'pass by reference is deprecated' I set a flag in my .ini file and that has now gone away, but still nothing happens.

Eep. I don't know the answer, but I'd probably tackle this by looking at how the app is written-- hopefully, all the session-handling stuff will be broken out in a separate library/class which will make thigns easier. FWIW, session handling in PHP is pretty easy, though it has a few small quirks that can bite you. I'd review php.net/session and esp. all the user comments at the bottom.
