Not PHP question but I NEED HELP

I know this is not a php question, but this is one of the few supports where people actually reply to you.

I have a problem. on one of my computer my internet doesn't work. When i open internet explorer it returns the message "Internet Explorer Could Not Open Search Page". I know that this has something to do with the computer not being able to resolve DNS or renew an ip address or something to do with DHCP. I have had the problem before and i was able to fix by running a restore point on my computer. This computer uses XP and I have even reinstalled the system and it still doesn't work. You may have to reinstall winsock32, but i have tried with msconfig, but i'm not really sure what i'm doing. I have also looked throught the registry to see if anything looked out of place.

I don't know what else to do.....Please help of give me a link that show me exactly what to do......I'm begging. Please help....I've been on the phone for hours with "Big Techies" and no one can help.

Okay, I'll go out on a limb here and try to help. First of all, I agree with tacohell. You should install Linux. Everyone knows Linux is awesome and affordable and will make your life easier... But if you want to keep your Windows XP (don't know why you would), fine... The problem can be fixed. Also, "Big Techies" that use Windows rarely exist and your chance of finding one that can help you is unlikely. Okay so let's start.

First of all, who is your ISP (internet service provider)? That has a lot to do with your issue. Without knowing that it will be impossible for us to help you. What kind of a connection do you have to the internet (i.e DSL, Cable Modem, Dial-Up). What does your ISP require you to have set up? Do not just jump right in and think this is DHCP problem or DNS. Also, have you tried going to other pages, besides that disgusting Windows search page. Might I recommend Google.com? Check this information and get back. One last thing to note. I regret saying this but I too have used XP and from what I've found, most of the settings are done automatically. For techies that is a bad thing but in your case, it means you should try to avoid making changes to your network properties. Let Bill Gates' multi-billion dollar system try to do it for you. And if you have reinstalled XP, then your problem is likely going to be outside your XP box.

following up what they all said-- XP worked for me right out of the box, but I'd hate to think about what would happen if it didn't. Assuming you have a decent DHCP connection (read: a working cablemodem that you know isn't weird, or uses PPOE, or whatever), then try reinstalling XP fresh. Yeah, it's kinda like taking a sledgehammer to a flea, but that's about the only way I know to make Windows work. tell me again why I keep it as my main OS?
