ODBC // MSSQL 2000 // PHP

Hello - My background in PHP has been, until now, in a exclusively Linux environment. My problem now is that we need to design our application for MSSQL (as apposed to MySQL).

We need a database abstraction layer - I do not have a choice there, I want to know what to use. AdoDB? Does anyone have custom drivers written? Will ODBC cause too much overhead for a database driven site?

How would I go about establishing the ODBC drivers under Windows?

Well,

I suggest using MyODBC which allows a DSN connection to your database. As for using MySQL, I haven't had a problem using MySQL on Windows 2000 or XP. It works fine unless you are wanting stored procedures then consider Postgre

We are bound to using MS SQL 2000 in this case, I'll try the MyODBC, hopefully connection time wont be as big of an issue as I have read is is.

Hi Steve,

No it won't. MyODBC is to be used with MySQL not MS SQL. MS SQL already supports it own DSN connection and you can even use it with a DSN-Less connection. If you intend to use PHP, I would suggest using MySQL since MS SQL does give a few problems with PHP. If you are going to be using a Windows platform, why not consider ASP or .NET

Neither are an option right now - I'll tool with it for a while and see what happens.....

BTW what are the "few problems"? Anything in particular (PHP has some native support for Sql server, and there does not seem to be any big documented issues with PHP on a Win platform.
