PHP on WinNT - session.save_path value

I searched the forums, and have seen numerous questions and threads on this problem. I have tried all the solutions that have been posted, but so far I am no further than when I started.

I installed PHP 4.2.1 to a Windows NT 4 server, using the ISAPI dll. My problem seems to be with the session.save_path setting - I've changed it to c:\temp, however PHP is ignoring it and trying to use /tmp instead, as is evident by the error messages I am getting, stating:

Warning: open(/tmp\sess_d9acfd979bd961bd49eb4aed589449e2, O_RDWR) failed: No
such file or directory (2) in C:\InetPub\testweb\main.php on line 2

I've made the change, and restarted the server, but it's still using the old value. Where else does this need to be changed? Why am I getting errors that say /tmp even though I've changed it? Why does this seem to be such a chronic problem with PHP under Windows NT?

I use Win2K, and here's the section from my PHP.ini that works for sessions.

[Session]
; Handler used to store/retrieve data.
session.save_handler = files

; Argument passed to save_handler. In the case of files, this is the path
; where data files are stored. Note: Windows users have to change this
; variable in order to use PHP's session functions.
;session.save_path = /tmp
session.save_path = E:\winnt\temp

; Whether to use cookies.
session.use_cookies = 1

Only other thing to check is that you only have one php.ini file and that it lives in in \winnt directory. Also if using notepad to edit it, make sure that notepad does stuff .txt on the end of you filename.

That section of my php.ini looks like yours (except the session.save_path is set to c:\temp) I checked and there are no other copies floating around. Are you using the CGI or the ISAPI setup for yours?

Well, I got sick of it and removed the entire thing. All reg entries, etc. Reinstalled from scratch, set all ini points before restarting the system. I've come to the following:

PHP.EXE as a CGI script engine fails. No idea why. You try to run the page and it just sits there, and eventually times out. If you stop the page before it times out, PHP.EXE is left running in Task Manager.

PHP4ISAPI.DLL works fine now, however phpinfo (or php -i) say that the server type is CGI. Weird.

I have no idea why this is so difficult! I realize that PHP was designed for UNIX and Apache type stuff, and the NT/IIS support is fairly new, but there has to be SOMEONE out there who knows why this won't all work properly! So far all I've received are e-mails from anti-NT zealots who expect me to trash my entire system and switch to UNIX just because THEY say it's better. NOT GONNA HAPPEN! You run your system, I'll run mine, and if I can't get this PHP garbage to work properly, it goes away.

try giving more access rights in your temp directory. it seems to that php must not create files in this directory. this helped me with IIS5. maybe apache likes it too

Well - you cant get much to work with php.exe - you must install PHP as a module.
(use apaches default httpd.conf)

Copy the file \php\php4ts.dll to c:\windows\system\

Specic for Apache 2.0.x and PHP 4.2x:
copy "\php\experimental\apache2filter.dll to \windows\system\" to get modules to work!

[httpd.conf]
LoadModule php4_module c:/webserver/php/sapi/php4apache.dll AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

4) Start Apache!
5) Try out phpInfo(); to see PHP works.

Now you can use extensions.

To get Sessions to work:
(create "C:\temp")
[php.ini]
session.save_path = C:\temp
session.cookie_path = c:\temp

It works for me .. but - I have some problems getting the sessions_vars ? I may fucked up my server testing ?
