I'm not even going to pretend this is related to PHP so if you're expecting it to be, press back. Sorry. Flame me if you like.
I'm writing, in PHP, a file index for a fileserver on a Windows network. The file index is on a Linux webserver. Theoretically, when users click the link to a file that isn't a directory, the file should launch in its own application (ie, Word should be launched for .doc files). Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to build some crap into IE that makes my life difficult by refusing to launch a separate application--it just opens the files inside of IE. Some files, non Microsoft ones for example, won't even open.
I know I've noticed IE launching helper apps before in the past for things like TIFF files. Where in the registry will I find the entries that control those helper applications?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the offtopic. As a response I'm also willing to take an alternate place I can ask this question...
