problem with mail()

if i use mail function, i get form server this response:
HTTP/1.1 502 Gateway Error Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0 Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 12:19:18 GMT Content-Length: 186 Content-Type: text/html
CGI Timeout
The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process.

is there any problem in server configuration or what is it?

I don't think it's a problem with the mail function. It's just taking too long to connect to your mail server. Are you sure the mail server is up and set up correctly in php.ini?? The default time limit on a php script is 30 seconds. this can be changed in php.ini..
