You could always take a trip to WebHostingTalk where a number of "free" operators hang out to discuss just how cheap they all are!

Brinkster has a sweet free ASP/db combo, and MyCgiBin.com has a nice JSP/Servlet/db for free, but the only free sites I know of for PHP/MySql kind of suck.

Bear in mind my reviews are not based on recent experience, but I just visited a couple sites and it didn't look like anything had changed.

http://spaceports.com/ has your basic free site thing going on complete with obtrusive ads, but complicated and frustrating to set up PHP/MySql via email with 'tech' support, then the database is down half the time.
My rating: good for little or nothing.

http://coolfreehost.com/ was much more functional, although they disable mail(). I was on the adult side, so it might be better on the general public server, but the pop-ups were ATROCIOUS. Persistantly refreshing on close, and every page change spawned a new batch.
My rating: Nice place to develop, no place to invite visitors unless they offer less popups on the public server.

Adding... I did find one use for the second mention, they were a great place to test out the best free third party pop-up stopper software! THe winner: WebWasher

When did stopping pop-up windows start requiring additional software? I've found the fast and dirty way to do this is to disable JavaScript. Some of the finer browsers out there, like Opera (and Galeon and Konqueror for those of us who hail from Linux and FreeBSD-world) let you keep JavaScript enabled, while disabling those nasty, unwarranted window.open() pop-ups...

I liked http://www.portland.co.uk. They give 15Mb free (with PHP of course). They dont give MySQL access tho, but their sister company www.portlandsql.co.uk does.

I host my site on lycos.co.uk. ftp access, mySQL, php, etc. everything is very fine but adds. I think there is a way to stop those adds, because when i host phpBB forum on lycos, i see no adds, while i do on my other pages. Maybe some kind of script or whatever? do anyone know more about "cracking" adds?

My personal preference is the security zones offered by IE, but it takes at least a little bit of technical savvy to take advantage of the security and flexibility the zones offer. They are not intuitive to get to, and are set up to be the least secure browser on the market by default.

I have not had a chance to use Opera. I have heard of Opera's ability to partially block javascript and it is a nice feature. Is it easy to turn on and off? Some legitimate banking sites and whatnot require the use of window.open() (terrible design, IMHO) and users need the ability to quickly reset that. With the program mentioned above that ability is available as a single click in the system tray.

My quest for a simple third party solution was for users who lacked the courage or ability to adjust their browser settings. Many people buy their Windoze systems and blindly assume it only makes sense that the system would be set up with their best interests in mind. Third party software can help protect them a little until they find out the truth.
