Today I learnt (think I learnt) it's harder to fix someone else code and get it to work properly rather than write it from scratch

There's a whole lot of "it depends" with that. Sometimes it might be true. Other times, you find out the reason the old code is such a complicated mess is that the thing being solved for is very complicated; and then you spend 5 times as much as time as you budgeted for while figuring out how to get it all to work in your new version and finding fixing all the bugs you introduced while doing so. (Voice of experience here 😉 )

If you override SoapClient::__doRequest() and then the call to parent::__doRequest() throws an exception, you cannot catch it within your override -- you have to catch it somewhere outside of it.
